The WeDo Game is one of our favourite toys. Engaging kids can be hard in a world of technology. Even so, this game continues to stand out. So much so that the psychologists who select our toys often use the WeDo game in their own sessions. By all means read on to learn how!

What is the WeDo Game?

Above all, the WeDo Game is made to inspire families to come together. It consists of 30 activity flashcards, with 3 different kinds available. These vary in age, including a Family Edition, Toddler Edition and Baby Edition. The creators of the WeDo Game made this genius concept to help their families share more quality time together. The many activities are also great for disconnecting from screens.

Why is the game great?

2020 and 2021 were years that families had to respond to change and turmoil. They did this by using their creativity, problem-solving skills and sense of humour. The WeDo Game puts the creative thought process of the whole family into practice. Creative thinking and problem solving are key skills that allow us to remain flexible. Additionally, they provide us with the capacity to respond to challenges part of our complex and changing world.

Engaging in play is healthy for all ages and is something that is often overlooked by adults. Play and creativity add much needed joy to the family unit, relieving stress and strengthening the connection between family members – and the WeDo Game offers exactly this! The educational psychologists at Scope Psychology Services Australia need to build trust and establish a connection with children quickly, and this game serves as a fantastic bridge to do so.

Insights from one of our psychologists

We sat down with Dr Kathy Bekavac from Scope Psychology Services Australia and asked her why she’s an advocate of using the WeDo Game in her therapy sessions with children. Here’s what she had to say!

How do you use the WeDo Game?

I make use of it all the time in both family workshops and therapy with individual clients. I find that doing one of the creative activities can help to engage children’s minds and establish the foundation for a connection. Sharing a bit of fun and laughter builds that trust and rapport between psychologist and client that is so necessary to making progress.”

Why do you recommend the game for parents?

“It’s not just great for kids, developing their brain function, working memory, creative skill and social skills, but its also great for parents. The amount of creativity and play that the WeDo Game inspires is stress relieving, the fun triggering the release of endorphins that make you feel great and promote your own sense of wellbeing. Creativity helps develop a social bond between parent and child: verbal communication, body language, boundaries, cooperation and teamwork. All things so easily achieved through play!”

What are some of your favourite activities in the WeDo Game?

My Visions Board

“In this activity, each family member creates a collage of words and images that describes their vision for what their future will look like in 10 years, then shares it describing how they will get there. I like to adjust the time frame to suit the audience and often provide stickers and craft materials so that the presentations are easy to create for everyone. It’s such a wonderful activity, and gives so much hope for the future.”

Snap Happy

“This activity involves getting the kids outside, which is always great! Everyone gets a camera and completes a treasure hunt of photos, including a picture of an animal and a flower. Thank goodness for mobile phones, which make this activity easy to do wherever you may be. Remembering to come together and share your experiences at the end is essential for getting the most out of the activity.”

The Interview

“This is often a go to because it’s so quick to do, great when you’ve not got too much time! Each family member comes up with a dream job and the rest of the family forms an interview panel to ask them questions. It’s a fun and optimistic way to think about the future, and the mock interviews make for great practice for adults and children. Fun, fun, fun!”
